Why floor positions are only the starting point
Pallet capacity is a geometry estimate, not a promise of a legal or safe load. Overhang, non-standard footprints, door clearance, cargo height, load bars and the sequence of pickup and delivery can all reduce how many pallets actually fit.
Weight matters independently. Dense freight may reach the gross or axle limit before every floor position is used. That is why an equipment plan should include both total pallet count and total gross shipment weight.
When double stacking is appropriate
Double stacking can increase the count of pallets carried only when the goods are stable, stackable and protected against compression; the pallet and packaging are strong enough; total height clears the equipment; and the combined weight remains within axle and carrier limits.
It is not a shortcut around payload limits. A second pallet on top may use available cube, but the same legal gross and axle-weight limits still apply. Confirm the final loading and securement approach with the carrier or warehouse team.
Turn the count into a useful request
Once you know the number, footprint, height and weight of the pallets, you can state the likely equipment requirement clearly: for example, “18 GMA pallets, 48 × 40 × 52 in, 9,000 lb total, ready Tuesday.” Add pickup and delivery accessorials before asking a carrier to quote it.
