Warehouse Space Calculator

8,000 pallet positions need about 5,760 m² (62,000 sq ft) with reach trucks. That is a 96 × 60 m building, 12 m clear to ESFR sprinklers, with EUR pallets 1.5 m high: 34 rows × 14 bays × 3 pallets × 6 levels = 8,568 positions, docks and aisles included. Narrow-aisle VNA trucks need about 4,644 m²; counterbalance trucks, with wider aisles and lower lift, about 9,954 m². Indicative planning figures.

How it's calculated

The calculator lays out a real rectangular building rather than applying a pallets-per-m² rule. It stacks levels until the load reaches the sprinkler gap or the truck's lift height, sizes a bay from the pallet width plus clearances and flues, then fits single rows against both side walls and back-to-back pairs between them, one aisle per pair of faces.

Along the depth it reserves 20% for docks, staging and offices, plus a front aisle and a 2 m rear aisle, and fits whole bays into the rest. For a pallet target it finds the shallowest whole-metre building at your width-to-depth ratio that reaches the count. For a floor area it lays out a rectangle of that area.

Racking alone, with no docks or cross aisles, holds about 228 positions per 100 m² with reach trucks. The whole building comes out nearer 149 per 100 m²: the difference is docks, staging and the aisles at each end.

Aisle widths by truck

  • Reach truck: 2.76 m aisle, lifting to about 11.5 m.
  • VNA (man-up): 1.75 m aisle, lifting to about 14 m.
  • Counterbalance: 4.21 m aisle, lifting to about 7 m.

These are typical datasheet working-aisle widths for a EUR pallet. Your truck's datasheet (look for “Ast”) overrides them; edit the aisle under Assumptions.

What it leaves out

Building columns, block stacking, drive-in and push-back racking, mezzanines and pick faces are not modelled. Rack clearances and sprinkler gaps follow published summaries of EN 15620 and NFPA 13, not the standards themselves, and local fire codes vary. Use the result to size a building or check a quote, then confirm the layout with a racking supplier and your fire authority.

Frequently asked questions

How many pallets fit in a warehouse?

With reach trucks, 12 m clear height and EUR pallets 1.5 m high, about 149 pallet positions per 100 m² of building (138 per 1,000 sq ft), docks and aisles included. Lower buildings, wider aisles or taller loads cut that sharply.

How much warehouse space do I need for 1,000 pallets?

About 912 m² (9,817 sq ft) with reach trucks in a 12 m clear building: a 38 × 24 m shed holds 1,008 positions. Small buildings lose a bigger share of their floor to docks and aisles.

Reach truck, VNA or counterbalance: which needs least space?

VNA, because its aisle is about 1.75 m against 2.76 m for a reach truck and 4.21 m for a counterbalance truck. For 8,000 positions that is about 4,644, 5,760 and 9,954 m². VNA trucks cost more and need guided aisles and a flat floor.

Can I use square feet?

Yes. Switch the area unit to sq ft and the floor area, building size and density are shown in feet. The assumptions stay in metres.

How accurate is it?

It is an indicative planning estimate. It builds a real layout from your assumptions, but it does not model columns or local fire-code rules, and its clearance tables come from published summaries rather than the standards. A racking supplier confirms the final count.
