Start with packed density
For a density-rated shipment, find cubic feet from packed length × width × height in inches ÷ 1,728. Then divide the total shipment weight in pounds by total cubic feet. The result gives a sensible class range to discuss before pickup.

Know where density stops
Density is one part of NMFC classification. A product can be harder to stow, unusually fragile, high value or subject to a commodity-specific item that produces a different class. Use the density number for planning, then confirm the final item when the shipment or exposure warrants it.

Treat a reclassification as a fact check
A reclassification is not automatically wrong, but it should be explainable. Ask which NMFC item was applied and which dimensions or weight were used. Compare those details with the packing record rather than approving a vague adjustment. Correcting a recurring data issue is much more valuable than disputing the same surprise shipment after shipment.
