Freight Class 200

Freight class 200 is a valid US LTL class outside the current standard 13-band full-density scale. It has no universal density range in this table; use the commodity's NMFC item and carrier tariff to confirm when it applies.

Where class 200 fits in US LTL classification and why the applicable NMFC item must be checked.

What class 200 means

Density is total packed weight divided by total packed cubic feet. For items using the standard full-density table, a higher density moves freight toward a lower class. Commodity-specific items can assign a different class or use their own density provisions.

Classification basis

Commodity-specific NMFC classification

Do not infer class 200 from a historical density chart. Ask your carrier or broker for the current NMFC item and its applicable provisions.

Why the carrier's class can differ

NMFC classification can account for more than density. A commodity may have a fixed class or a density sub-provision, and handling, stowability and liability can change the official item. Use this page to check the standard table's applicability, then verify the current NMFC item with the carrier or broker quoting the shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What density is freight class 200?

Class 200 has no universal band in the current standard full-density table. It can apply through commodity-specific NMFC items; confirm the item and carrier tariff.

Is class 200 guaranteed from density alone?

No. Density is guidance for density-rated freight. The official NMFC item can also depend on commodity, handling, stowability and liability.
